I was just poking around on Youtube to see if anybody had ever written a song about the Battle of Blair Mountain, a disgraceful tale of corporate control resisted in West Virginia. The state and local governments were basically a fiefdom of the coal companies. Believe it or not, the leaders were actually tried for the death penalty for treason against the state in an attempt to break the fledgling United Mine Workers. The prosecutors were not the normal elected people, but coal company attorneys. The leaders were acquitted by juries after getting the case moved to a non-coal producing county. The US government dropped chemical weapons left over from WW1 on our own citizens, although most of the pilots "goofed" and dropped them in the rivers. This is a wonderful song, minimalist, yet poignant, and the unnamed background strings are done just right. This is a near forgotten incident that needs to be memorialized. The miners who died there would be proud.
